Trail of Robin Hood – TCM – Dec. 15

Happy Holidays everybody!!

Please don’t pay any attention to the title, Trail of Robin Hood is one of the few Westerns with a holiday theme and it is one of Dad’s!  The outdoor shots were made in Big Bear, CA where the mountains and pine trees are magnificent.

I understand from friends that Trail of Robin Hood has been redone by Paramount and that it is even more beautiful than when it was originally released by Republic!

Republic made several Westerns where they had their Western stars make cameo appearances in each other’s films. Jack Holt, kneeling on the far right, is raising Christmas trees for orphans and the “bad guys” are trying to steal the trees!!! How low and bad can one get?

If you look closely in the picnic scene, you will catch sight of me (I was 10). I had one line and asked Mr. Holt for his autograph (he was a retired movie star in the film).

Dad and I during a break in filming.

I think that if Paramount would just retitle the film it would become a Christmas tradition and we would see it every year.  Especially, since they have redone it so beautifully!

Be sure to check your local TV schedule to see what time TCM (Turner Classic Movies) will show Trail of Robin Hood in your area on December 15.

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!

One of my favorites! You can almost smell those Christmas trees, and Roy sings, “Every Day is Christmas in the West.”

What a lovely memory you must have of those experiences, they’re such enjoyable stories! Merry Christmas and Happy 2019!

  1. Hi: While looking at the photo above, I noticed the fourth man, standing, from the left is Allan “Rocky” Lane but is listed as third in line. Do you know who the missing man might be?
    Thanks and RIDE EASY PARD…..Vic

    1. I’ve never noticed it before but Rex Allen is to listed and he is on the far left.
Thanks for bringing it to my attention.

Love this movie! Thanks for the advance notice!

  2. Thanks Cheryl for all you do. I’m so glad that I have lived as long as I have (76 years) to be able to watch these vintage western movies with all my childhood heroes, Roy, Gene, Hoppy, Tex Ritter plus all the early 50’s TV westerns. You ,Bob Terry and You Tube have done a wonderful job of keeping all of this going for us. I missed the “Trail of Robin Hood” showing. When or where could so see it? I’ll try You Tube.

I have a multipage brochure I picked up probably at an estate sale with all the still shots from the Robin Hood movie. I just looked it up to see where it was filmed. My buddies and I were discussing all the western movies filmed at Old Tucson where we live today. I was seeing if The Trail of Robin Hood was filmed here. Any way is the brosure from 1950 (in color). Scarce?

    1. I only remember Republic shooting in and around Big Bear, CA for shots where they needed big pine trees. Most of the film was shot on the sound stage at the studio! Cheryl
