Marion (Mimi) Swift (1940 – 2021)

.

My sister, Marion (Mimi) McGinnis Fleming Eaton Swift was born Dec. 19, 1940 in an air-raid shelter in Edinburgh, Scotland.  She always hated that her birthday was so close to Christmas, so we would sometimes celebrate our birthdays together in June. Mimi was the youngest of four children and shortly after her birth, her parents separated. As single parents, neither was able to look after their children and the Church of Scotland stepped in and took over their custody.

In December of 2019, Mimi took her children (Laurie, Dan and David [with spouses] to Scotland. My friend, Larry Zwisohn, found the following article (from the BBC News) which was written by Steven Brocklehurst on December 14 of 2019. I’m not reprinting the entire article as it is quite long and I want to add pictures. I have sometimes add asides and they are in parentheses.

…When she was 13, her luck changed when film stars Roy Rogers and Dale Evans discovered her in Dunforth, a Church of Scotland children’s home. On that day, Marion stepped forward to sing a song. Roy and Dale were so charmed that they wanted to bring the tiny (4’11 and 3/4″) girl with the lovely voice to their home in America…

She remembers her time in Dunforth, which overlooks the water at Newhaven, fondly, despite the home having a strict regime that made the children work hard. One of Mimi’s duties was to light the coal fire and prepare the house of Police Chief Willie Merrilees, a patron of the children’s home who raised funds for them to have parties and outings. It was Merrilees who brought the famous singing cowboy and his wife to the children’s home…

…The celebrity couple caused quite a stir when they checked into Edinburgh’s Caledonian Hotel dressed in white cowboy suits and matching Stetson, leading the golden palomino (Trigger) up the grand staircase. Wherever they went on tour, Roy and Dale always visited children in local orphanages and hospitals. And, Willie Merrilees was their guide as they went to Dunforth.

Mimi as Mom and Dad first saw her at Dunforth. Mr. Merrilees is behind and to her left.

Mimi says the Hollywood pair did a couple of numbers from their show for the children.  Then she (Mimi) sang a song called “Won’t You Buy My Pretty Flowers” for them. Later that evening, Dunforth’s matron told Mimi that she had been invited to see the show and even have lunch with the couple. Mimi ate wit Roy and Dale and then watched the show, which had been sold out for months, from the backstage wings of the theater. Afterwards, Dale asked if she would like to visit them in California for the summer….She was welcomed into the Rogers’ family and did not return to Scotland until she was married with a daughter of her own. The return was for an edition of the popular biographical TV show, “This is Your Life,” which was honoring The Chief Constable of Edinburgh, Willie Merrilees….

With sister Cheryl to show her the ropes, Mimi adapted quickly fo California life and was even a high school cheerleader. She got married to a boy from school.  “I was way too young,” she says. Her husband, Dan Eaton (who had Native American heritage), joined the Marine Corps and they were stationed at bases around the US (longest in Hawaii). After leaving the service, he was killed in a car accident when their three children were still young. Some years later, she married Bill Swift. They were married until he passed away a couple of years ago. Bill and Mimi made several trips back to Scotland. Mimi now has several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Left to right: Laurie, Mimi, Dan and David

Mimi says that she is still amazed that people are interested in her life. “It’s such an old story and I’m always surprised when someone brings it up,” says Mimi. “I think it encourages people to think that maybe there is a bright spot in their life down the road.  They just haven’t reached it.  There’s always hope,” she says… (end of article)

I know that going on that last trip to Scotland meant a lot to Mimi. She was bubbling over with happiness when they got back.  Other than her grandchildren and “the greats,” it was all she talked about for ages.

Mimi had retired from many years of working for the Palmdale School Board but she remained active as the current president of the Happy Trails Children’s Foundation in Apple Valley, CA.  She also was kept busy attending activities with her children, grandchildren and “the greats.”

She will be greatly missed by everyone who was privileged to meet her over the years. She was always bubbly, enthusiastic and talkative.  I don’t think she ever met a stranger (just like Mom).

She was a wonderful sister and I will never be able to celebrate Thanksgiving or Christmas without waiting for her to call to check on the correct oven temperature and time for the turkey!!

Thank you Cheryl for relating Mimi’s life story. She was a wonderful lady. I got to know Mimi and Bill at the Happy Trails Cowboy Christmas dinner. They were there every year, and I came to know her as a very gracious, friendly lady. She will be missed by so many people. My condolences to the Rogers family.

Very nice tribute to your sister… We remember you introducing us to her in Lone Pine… While we really didn’t get a chance to know her well, we could tell she was a really good person… Thats quite a fairytale story to go along with your own… Sounds like your Mom and Dad had a soft spot for a pretty smile… All our love, Paul and Laurie

Hi Cheryl, I’m so very sorry to hear about losing your sister,MiMi!Your Books and other Author’s Books showed me her great winning personality! Even her Photos show that! You could tell from her smiles and you could see she had a wonderful personalty! I wish I could have met her and the rest of the kids!I only got to meet Roy’s sister Cleda, and I met Dale twice! Will she be interred in her native Scotland?I just lost my brother a few months ago and I know what you’re feeling right now!God Bless Mini , you Cheryl and the rest of the family! Bob Slate Exeter, California

    1. Hi Bob, Mimi will be interred in CA with her late husband.

  1. Hello Cheryl, – My name is David Wells and I’m in Fresno, California by way of a little town in Northwest Ohio. When I was a kid I watched your Dad and Mom on TV. It’s amazing how you and your family have influenced people and their thinking for the better over the years. I’ve been deeply touched by you and your stories of past family and history. Since I signed up on your mailing list some time back I’ve come to be touched by your efforts and want to thank you for it. With the passing of your dear sister your grief can be consoled by the fact that although we don’t understand all there is to know about life, we can take comfort in knowing that God too, is grieving for the lost souls that don’t repent and come back to Him and His ways that His Son taught us. Your parents knew this, and they walked the walk and didn’t merely talk the talk, and for that you also can be grateful and take joy and comfort in realizing and knowing that FACT. Your sister’s life and your life are a testimony and witness to the love your parents had towards God and his creation and the people in it. That testimony will live on forever via all the people it influenced for generations to come. What a great reward that must be to both you, your sister, and your parents in heaven! May you be loved, blessed and comforted by us all here today, who knew of your parents and what they did with their lives.

Thank you for such a deeply personal and beautifully human recount of events in your family life. It made me think of the Eilers ranch in Granada Hills where we met in Bible Study classes. I do not know what happened in Leonard Eilers Jr’s. life after he left San Fernando High School where we were both pole vaulters. I know that daughter Joy Eilers was engaged in the Billy Graham organization for quite a while. I hope everyone is still on the green side of the grass. I also hope that you and your friends and family are well, safe and succeeding. Happy Saturday, Joe Keith Lockwood

    1. Hi Keith, sorry but my understanding is that both Len and Joy have passed away some time ago.
While you were pole vaulting, did you compete against Canoga’s Larry Barnett? That’s who I am married to and he says that pole vaulters all knew each other. Cheryl

Thank you Cheryl for the beautiful tribute to Mimi. Our condolences go out to the Rogers Family in the loss of fellowship here on earth with Mimi. Thankful for the privilege of knowing her and the great and gracious lady that she grew up to be. Thankful for the closeness you had growing up together. The beautiful memories you all have of her, the special moments you shared. Though Mimi is truly home now, she has left a great hole for her loved ones that she has left behind. The blessing that Mimi was to each of you will be missed. Yet each one that knew her is better because of her impact in their lives, knowing how much she loved each and every one of her family.

    Hi Cheryl,
Words can’t begin to describe how I felt about Mimi. We became instant friends at all the fundraisers at the museum in Victorville, CA, and the Lone Pine Film Festivals. She was always so happy-go-lucky when we met each other.I will never forget when the Roy Rogers and Dale Evans Sunset Chapel was dedicated, in 2007. Many fans had showed up for this special occasion. After she and I were having a conversation, I realized the chapel was packed, so she grabbed my hand and took me up to the front where I sat with her and the rest Rogers family. I will forever remember her kindness and friendship.

I worked with Mimi in Palmdale many years ago. I’ll never forget the day she took me and my daughters to a rodeo where we all had a lot of laughs and she told me the story of meeting her adoptive parents for the first time. She was Very smart and a lot of fun to be with.

I just read her story and I don’t see anywhere where she was raised by Roy Rogers and Dale Evans. Mimi Rogers bio on wikipedia doesn’t support any of the stories that they adopted her.

    1. Mimi was my foster sister. Since she was a citizen of Great Britain, my parents couldn’t adopt her. BUT, as far as we were concerned, she was our sister!

I met Mimi in LaHabra CA when my son and her son played baseball on the same team. I think it was around 1969-70. She was so sweet and caring. We became friends quickly. She visited with me in my home. I didn’t live in LaHabra very long and unfortunately, to my regret, after I moved away I lost contact with her. So sorry to hear of her passing . She was a blessing to all who crossed her path here on earth.

    1. Mimi was a wonderful sister and I miss her all the time. Especially during the holidays when she would call me to find out the temp and time for cooking the turkey!
